Longtime ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 11’ Showrunner Krista Vernoff Is Leaving the Shows

Not only Ellen Pompeo is hanging up her scrubs. Longtime showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19, Krista Vernoff, will leave both Shondaland series at the conclusion of their current seasons.

In the early days of Grey’s Anatomy, Vernoff served as an executive producer and even authored some episodes, notably the Season 2 episode “Into You Like a Train,” which was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Writing. She then served as the showrunner from 2007 to 2011 before returning to the position in 2017 and transferring her skills to Station 19 for its third season.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Vernoff stated in a statement that it was an honor of a lifetime to oversee Grey’s Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the past four. “It is impossible to overestimate the enthusiasm of the loyal fandoms and the influence these shows have on hearts and minds. The amount of skill in these two great casts and these two brilliant writer rooms is unfathomable, and each week these crews create magic. I shall be eternally thankful to Shonda Rhimes for her confidence, as well as to Disney and ABC for their assistance.”

She continued, “The last time I left Grey’s Anatomy, I was gone for seven seasons, and the show was still airing when Shonda asked me to take over as executive producer. Therefore, I will not say farewell, as it would be too heartbreaking. “See you in seven seasons,” I say.

Prior to running two ABC series concurrently, Vernoff worked on Charmed from 2000 to 2004, first as a story editor and then as a co-producer. After contributing to episodes of Law & Order and Private Practice, she joined Shameless as a writer and co-executive producer in 2012.

“Krista’s creativity, vision, and committed leadership have allowed Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 to flourish,” Shonda Rhimes told EW. “I am indebted to her for all of her hard work. She will forever be a member of the Shondaland family.

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 will both return to ABC on Thursday, February 23.
