London experienced record-breaking temperatures on Saturday, surpassing those of Ibiza, due to an Iberian plume, as reported by the Met Office.
The capital city reached a scorching 30 degrees Celsius, with Heathrow recording a high of 30.5 degrees Celsius.
However, the intense heat took its toll during the Trooping the Colour rehearsal, with three soldiers collapsing.
While a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Wales and southern and central England, some areas in Scotland are likely to avoid the extreme conditions.
Scorching Saturday in London:
Londoners enjoyed the hottest day of the year on Saturday, thanks to warm air flowing from the south.
Temperatures soared to 30 degrees Celsius, exceeding those typically experienced in Ibiza.
The Met Office recorded a peak of 30.5 degrees Celsius at Heathrow, signaling a significant heatwave in the capital.
The intense heat even caused three soldiers to collapse during the Trooping the Colour rehearsal, emphasizing the challenges posed by the sweltering weather.
Thunderstorm Warnings and Regional Outlook:
Despite the scorching temperatures, a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Wales and a large portion of southern and central England until 10.30 pm on Saturday.
The warning highlights the potential for travel disruptions, power cuts, and localized flooding.
Additionally, a second yellow warning for thunder is in effect from midday to 9 pm on Sunday, covering Wales, Northern Ireland, most of western and central England, and Scotland.
However, some parts of eastern and northern Scotland are expected to experience less extreme conditions.
Weather Forecast and Heatwave Criteria:
According to Dan Stroud, a meteorologist from the Met Office, Sunday will see a slight increase in cloud cover, leading to slightly lower temperatures of around 28-29 degrees Celsius.
There may be a few showers and thunderstorm warnings.
The early part of the upcoming week will continue to be hot, with thunder and showers on Monday, followed by an attempt to settle down on Tuesday and mid-week.
However, the well-above-average temperatures are likely to persist, meeting the criteria for a heatwave across most of the UK.
Amber Alert for Hot Weather:
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber alert for hot weather until 9 am on Tuesday. T
his alert applies to the West Midlands, East Midlands, east of England, South East, and South West regions.
The amber alert signifies that the impact of the heat is expected to be felt across the entire healthcare system and the wider population, not just the most vulnerable individuals.
Furthermore, a yellow alert, indicating potential disruptions to services due to weather conditions, is in place for the North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humber regions, as well as London.
