Liz Truss, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her 70-year reign ended.

Thursday, the Queen passed away at the age of 96. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history. The statement was delivered by palace officials at approximately 6.30 p.m. local time.

Three days ago, Truss formally assumed the role of prime minister, a position appointed directly by the Queen.

Truss, speaking in front of 10 Downing Street, referred to the Queen as “the rock upon which modern Britain was constructed.”

“Our nation has prospered and grown during her reign. She is responsible for Britain’s current greatness “Truss continued by describing the Queen’s accession to the throne immediately following World War II and her expansion of the Commonwealth group of nations.

“We are today a modern, prosperous, and dynamic nation,” added Truss, highlighting the “stability and strength” exhibited throughout her reign.

Truss highlighted that she was the 15th prime minister appointed by the Queen, with Winston Churchill being the first.

Truss stated, “She has visited more than 100 countries and impacted the lives of millions around the world.”

“In the upcoming painful days, we will gather with our friends from the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the rest of the world to honor her great contribution.

“Today is a day of deep sorrow, yet Queen Elizabeth II leaves behind an enduring legacy.”

She then pledged her loyalty to King Charles III, who automatically succeeded the Queen upon her passing.

She stated, “The crown transfers to our new king, our new head of state, His Majesty King Charles III, as it has for more than a thousand years.”

“We offer him our allegiance and dedication, just as his mother did for so many years.

“And with the end of the second Elizabethan period, we usher in a new era in the glorious history of our great nation. As Her Majesty would have desired, the phrase “God save the King” was spoken.”
