The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) is taking steps to foster gender inclusivity in traditionally male-dominated industries.
The ministry has called upon female engineers to contribute to technical support programs aimed at empowering women to excel in fields typically dominated by men.
The primary objective is to enhance the financial sustainability of young and active women residing across the Lagos Metropolis.
Enlisting the Support of Female Engineers
During a recent courtesy visit by representatives from the Nigerian Society of Female Engineers, led by Engr. (Mrs.) Ayodolapo Bello, Mrs. Oluyemi Kalesanwo, the Permanent Secretary of WAPA, emphasized the importance of such collaboration.
She commended the Nigerian Society of Female Engineers for their ongoing efforts in promoting the development and growth of women and youths in Lagos.
Mrs. Kalesanwo suggested that both entities should join forces to design and implement empowerment programs specifically targeting vulnerable women throughout the State.
Empowerment Through Skills Acquisition
Mrs. Kalesanwo reiterated the commitment of the State Government to empower women and youths, enabling them to provide vital support to their families.
She encouraged women and young individuals to enroll in any of the 19 Skills Acquisition Centers situated in proximity to them.
These centers offer free education in a variety of vocational skills, encompassing 20 different disciplines.
The aim is to equip participants with the knowledge and abilities needed to attain financial independence, subsequently contributing to the overall progress of society.
Addressing Poverty Through Collaboration
Highlighting the prevalent poverty levels in society, Mrs. Kalesanwo stressed the necessity of engaging engineers as technical facilitators during intervention programs.
By incorporating tech-driven skills and knowledge acquisition into these initiatives, participants can enhance their employability and economic prospects.
She further emphasized the significance of collaboration between the State Government and Civil Society Organizations.
This collaboration, she argued, would effectively address the needs of citizens and contribute positively to the socio-economic advancement of Lagos State.
A Call for All-Inclusive Empowerment Strategies
In response, Mrs. Ayodolapo Bello, the Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Female Engineers, expressed the society’s keen interest in partnering with the Ministry.
Their aim is to jointly develop empowerment initiatives that embrace all segments of society.
This inclusive approach seeks to bring about comprehensive intervention strategies, ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest for empowerment and progress.
