The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has reiterated its dedication to enhancing collaboration with the State Police Command in combating the scourge of domestic and sexual violence.
The agency aims to provide vital support to victims of abuse, working hand-in-hand with the police.
Welcome Courtesy Visit by Commissioner of Police
During a courtesy visit to the Novel House Office of the Agency in Ikeja, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, warmly received the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa.
The visit signifies a positive step towards strengthening collaborative efforts between DSVA and the police to combat Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and protect the most vulnerable individuals in the state.
Achieving Success in the Fight against SGBV
Vivour-Adeniyi highlighted the State Government’s accomplishments in tackling SGBV through various programs, policies, and interventions championed by DSVA.
These efforts have not only raised awareness but also facilitated justice for survivors of domestic violence across the state.
Police Commissioner Commends DSVA’s Exceptional Work
The Commissioner of Police praised the outstanding work of the Lagos DSVA in combating SGBV and domestic violence, ensuring the rights of victims and survivors are safeguarded.
Owohunwa reaffirmed the police’s commitment to collaborating with the government and supporting the agency in fulfilling its statutory mandate.
Strengthening Police Response and Support Systems
The Commissioner highlighted ongoing initiatives to strengthen intra-Police coordination, ensuring prompt response to cases within the force.
The Lagos Police Command plans to establish Family Support Units (FSU) in its 110 Police Divisions and 70 Outposts across the state.
These units will be equipped with appropriate structures and staff will receive comprehensive training.
Upgrading the Gender Desk Department
The Commissioner revealed plans to upgrade the Gender Desk Department within the Police, enabling improved investigation of cases and streamlined access to medical, legal, and other support services for survivors.
The aim is to create a comprehensive support system under one roof, ensuring diligent investigation and prosecution of cases.
Promoting Awareness and Breaking the Culture of Silence
Recognizing the importance of breaking the culture of silence surrounding SGBV, the Commissioner called for increased awareness campaigns by the agency.
Such efforts are crucial in encouraging residents to speak up and seek help, ultimately ensuring survivors receive the assistance they urgently need.
