Labour Party Criticizes National Security Adviser’s Claims of Improved Security Situation
The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, for his recent statement claiming that the security situation in Nigeria has improved.
After a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Ribadu stated that the record of crimes and activities of criminals in the country are decreasing and will continue to do so.
However, the Labour Party, through its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, expressed skepticism and described the NSA’s comments as rushed.
Labour Party Urges Security Chiefs to Take Action against Insecurity
In a statement, the Labour Party emphasized that the insecurity in Nigeria has actually worsened.
They called upon Nuhu Ribadu and other security chiefs to take immediate action to counter terrorism and restore sanity to the nation.
The party urged them to hit the ground running and address the alarming rise in insecurity, rather than making premature claims about improvement.
Instances of Insecurity Contradict NSA’s Claims
The Labour Party highlighted recent incidents that demonstrate the ongoing security challenges in the country.
They pointed out that just last Friday, suspected terrorists fired a rocket-propelled grenade at Dambia town in Borno State, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to 11 others.
Additionally, worshippers were attacked in Ogun state, leading to the death of a pentecostal pastor and the kidnapping of seven worshippers.
The party further cited numerous cases of banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other crimes across various regions of Nigeria.
They emphasized that Nigeria’s security situation is a grave concern and should not be politicized.
Need for Action Over Empty Rhetoric
While acknowledging the capabilities of the new security chiefs, particularly Nuhu Ribadu, the Labour Party emphasized that action is crucial.
They called for tangible results rather than empty speeches and rhetoric, as seen during the previous administration.
The party highlighted unresolved cases such as the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls and the continued captivity of Leah Sharibu.
They also pointed out the terror attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train in March 2022, which resulted in deaths and abductions.
The Labour Party questioned the effectiveness of the significant budgetary allocations for security, considering the escalating insecurity in the country.
Government’s Responsibility to Ensure Security
The Labour Party affirmed its support for the current administration’s assurance that tackling insecurity is a priority.
They emphasized that it is the primary responsibility of the government to ensure the security of lives and property, as stated in the Nigerian Constitution.
The party called on the government to rise above partisan interests and work diligently to address the security challenges, highlighting that only a secured nation can attract the investments needed for progress.
Labour Party Holds Buhari-led APC Government Accountable
The Labour Party held the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government accountable for its failure in providing adequate security.
They urged the government to surpass the shortcomings of the previous administration and effectively utilize the investments made in the security system.
The party emphasized that a secure nation is essential for attracting much-needed investments to Nigeria.
