Labour Party Condemns Suspension of Central Bank Governor by President Tinubu

The Labour Party (LP) has expressed its disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, stating that such an action without the approval of the National Assembly is inappropriate.

The party claims that the President’s decision is vindictive and unconstitutional, suggesting that Emefiele is being punished for his actions against Tinubu.

LP’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, asserted that Tinubu lacks the authority to order Emefiele’s resignation.

While individuals have the right to ask the President or anyone to resign, Ifoh emphasized that having the right does not equate to having the power.

The party drew inspiration from Femi Gbajabiamila’s previous questioning of the President’s authority in sacking a CBN Governor, emphasizing the absence of rule of law, equity, justice, and fair play in the country.

Disregard for Rule of Law and the Shambles of Nigerian Society

Ifoh maintained that the lack of respect for the rule of law is the root cause of the deteriorating state of affairs in various aspects of Nigerian society.

He lamented that the embattled CBN governor is paying the price for daring to challenge Tinubu.

The LP spokesperson argued that if any institution should be investigated, it should be the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), considering the irregularities in the recently concluded general election.

According to Ifoh, a policy believed to be directed against a particular candidate has been deemed an unforgivable offense by Tinubu, and Emefiele is being made the scapegoat.

INEC’s Role and the Need for a Thorough Investigation

Ifoh questioned the urgency with which the government is investigating the CBN and called for a thorough investigation of INEC and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The LP spokesperson criticized INEC for the mockery of democracy, highlighting the substantial amount of taxpayer money received by the commission and its failure to conduct a credible election.

He accused INEC of openly displaying partisan behavior during and after the election, even at the tribunal.

LP’s Call for Investigation into the CBN and Previous Government’s Interference

The LP urged the APC-led government to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the CBN, particularly focusing on the interference of the previous APC government in the operations of the apex bank.

The party believes that such an investigation is warranted given the issues raised about the financial sector and the need for reforms.

In summary, the Labour Party strongly criticized President Tinubu’s suspension of the Central Bank Governor, emphasizing the lack of constitutional approval and accusing the President of vindictiveness.
