Kyle Tucker and Pete Alonso, former high school teammates, will reunite next week to represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Despite being opponents earlier in the week, Tucker and Alonso look forward to playing together again. Tucker, an outfielder for the Astros, praised Alonso’s work ethic and talent, noting that he was among the best hitters in high school and college and now in the major leagues.

Alonso, the first baseman for the Mets, is excited to play on the same team as Tucker, as well as other Mets teammates Jeff McNeil, Adam Ottavino, and Brooks Raley.

Alonso is also thrilled to play with Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League MVP. The Mets players will join other major league stars in Phoenix on Monday to begin preparing for the tournament.

McNeil, who will be participating in the tournament for the first time, is looking forward to playing alongside Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. Ottavino pitched for Team Italy in 2009 and noted that the experience of representing their country could further bond the Mets teammates.

Alonso acknowledged that the competition will be fierce, particularly in the Miami bracket, which includes Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. However, he sees the tournament as an opportunity to showcase the game to multiple countries and grow the sport worldwide.
