Khetha Shandu stands resigned as chief whip of the Ekurhuleni council

Khetha Shandu, the top whip and DA councillor for the City of Ekurhuleni, resigned amidst attempts to remove him via a vote of no confidence.

Shandu stated in his resignation letter dated Wednesday that he was departing “immediately and for personal reasons.”

“I am writing to formally tell you of my resignation as the whip of council and a councillor of the City of Ekurhuleni, effective immediately today, 1 February 2023, due to personal circumstances. “Thank you for your support during my time in office,” the letter states.

Last week, Independent Citizens Movement chairman Joe Mojapelo introduced a resolution of no confidence against Shandu. However, he was saved another day in office because the EFF and DA caused the council meeting to fail.

After Shandu’s departure, a council meeting has been arranged for Thursday afternoon.

City council speaker Raymond Dhlamini is also on the chopping block. According to Sunday World, a vote of no confidence against Dhlamini remains on the schedule.
