Former Prime Minister of Australia, Paul Keating, has strongly criticized the decision of Anthony Albanese’s government to accept the AUKUS defence pact, which involves purchasing eight nuclear-powered submarines in collaboration with the United States and the United Kingdom.
Mr. Keating has called this pact the “worst deal in history” and questioned the competence of the Labor leader.
Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, Mr. Keating stated that the AUKUS defence pact was a strategic error as he believes that China does not pose a real threat of invasion.
He expressed his concern over the speed at which the Albanese government accepted the $360 billion deal, which was negotiated by the previous Morrison government, in just 24 hours.
Mr. Keating raised the question of how a decision of this magnitude could be made within such a short timeframe.
He believes that it is only possible if the decision-makers lack the necessary perceptiveness to understand the weight of the decision they are making.
He went on to criticize the Albanese government’s handling of the situation, calling it incompetence, although he also suggested that it may be a result of their effort to try.
