Kayla Brantley explains how marijuana became prevalent in the US

Within a decade of cracking down on marijuana use, the United States transformed the sector into a $47 billion market.

But the journey to having dispensaries on every corner, the air reeking of marijuana smoke, and criminal records wiped did not happen quickly.

It took two states, Colorado and Washington in 2012, to spearhead the legalization of marijuana across the nation.

There are now 21 states where recreational cannabis use is permitted. Before or soon after the morning commute, for instance, people in every nook and cranny of New York City are inhaling marijuana, assaulting one’s sense of smell.

However, not everyone supports the cannabis revolution. Doctors and campaigners have expressed worry regarding the excessive use of cannabis among high-risk populations, particularly adolescents.
