Joey Porter Jr. is a cornerback from Penn State, who believes that his game is similar to that of the Jets’ Sauce Gardner. Gardner made First-Team All-Pro last season and was the top-ranked lockdown defender in 2022.

Porter believes that he fits the same mould as Gardner and can be physical too. Porter’s father was a four-time Pro Bowl linebacker, and he later became an NFL assistant coach.

Porter Jr. is competing against Devon Witherspoon and Christian Gonzalez to be the first cornerback drafted. One knock on Porter is that he only had one interception in 34 career games.

However, he is always in a good position, and NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes that he can work through wide receivers to get to the ball. Porter is a physical press corner who is CB1 for a reason.

Porter had a hard conversation with his parents after the 2021 season, where they told him he wasn’t ready. It was a childhood dream of Porter’s to enter the NFL after he got to do one-on-one drills against a young Antonio Brown during Steelers practices.

He listened to his parents because his father had been there before, and it paid off.

Porter is now battling to be the first cornerback drafted. He feels that he has a good mix of his father’s persona on the field and his mother’s persona off the field. She is more laid-back and poised, and Porter believes that he has that attitude too.

Porter only had one interception in his career, while Gardner had nine interceptions at Cincinnati without ever allowing a touchdown catch. However, Porter believes that he is CB1 for a reason and is the best corner at the NFL combine. He wants to show off his skills and prove them to everyone.

One of the reasons that Porter may not have had as many interceptions is that quarterbacks may have thrown in other directions due to his presence.

Porter can high-point the ball and work through wide receivers to get to it. He is more of a play-the-ball, poke-it-away, and get-your-hands-on-the-ball type of cornerback. Porter wants to be better than his father and continue the family legacy.
