Joburg Water warns residents of a persistent water interruption

The City of Johannesburg issued a notice on Tuesday warning the inhabitants about a planned water interruption due to an emergency shutdown.

After a huge pipe rupture happened on the corner of Tana and Nanyuki roads, the water network in Sunninghill has been drained and the repair work, which started at 5am, would continue until 8pm on Tuesday, it stated.

The impacted areas include Sunninghill, Gallo Manor, Rivonia, Woodmead, Morningside, Edenburg and Waterfall.

Joburg Water has apologised for the disruption caused by the emergency outage and vowed to update the homeowners on progress achieved.

“Our infrastructure faces several challenges including loadshedding and an increase in water demand due to the heat wave. Though some of our important sites are exempted from loadshedding, the corporation is handling this through back-up systems, said Joburg Water.

“However, our towers are taking strain. To maintain a consistent water supply, we urge homeowners to respect level-one water restrictions and limit consumption. Level-one water restrictions prohibit the use of hosepipes between 6am to 6pm, and the use of hosepipes for paved areas and driveways.

“Customers are encouraged to use greywater to irrigate or to water gardens, wash cars or clean driveways.”

It vowed to continue to monitor the situation and to deliver updates throughout the day.

On Monday, Rand Water cautioned consumers to use water sparingly, warning if the customers refuse to comply, it will have to enforce water restrictions.

Since temperatures began to rise a week ago, Rand Water’s Makenosi Maroo said the company has observed an increase in water consumption. According to Maroo, “as a result, water storage in reservoirs has been rapidly declining.”
