Jim Harbaugh is once again considering a return to the NFL.

NFL Network claimed on Sunday that the Broncos will interview the Michigan head coach early this week, despite the fact that he stated on Thursday that he “expected” to remain in his position through 2023.

To replace Nathaniel Hackett, who was sacked after one season as head coach, the Broncos are anticipated to interview former Saints head coach Sean Payton, among others.

Harbaugh, 59, has been out of the NFL since 2014, four years after guiding the 49ers to a 44-19-1 record. Since then, his name has frequently been linked to NFL job positions, but he has always returned to Michigan.

Last week, after being linked to the Panthers’ position, Harbaugh released a statement through the University of Michigan addressing the “rumors and speculation.”

On December 31, 2022, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh reacts during a College Football Playoff semifinal versus TCU.

“As I stated in December, while no one can predict the future, I anticipate coaching Michigan enthusiastically in 2023,” Harbaugh wrote. I appreciate President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel’s support for me and our program. Our purpose as Wolverines continues, and we are preparing with great passion and zeal for the 2023 season.

“As our legendary coach Bo Schembechler said … ‘Those who stay will be champions.’”

Harbaugh and Michigan have been close to accomplishing that goal over the last two seasons, reaching the College Football Playoff in back-to-back years. But as the No. 2 seed both times, they have lost in the semifinals in both years, including getting upset by No. 3 TCU last weekend.

The Broncos will interview Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of Michigan.

The NCAA is apparently investigating Michigan for possible recruitment infractions during the COVID-19 dead period, which may result in a multi-game penalty for Harbaugh if he remains at Ann Arbor.

Harbaugh interviewed with the Vikings during the offseason preceding their hiring coach Kevin O’Connell.
