Jesse Porter, 58, reportedly shot a 25-year-old at a library

According to the metropolitan police, a former police officer fatally shot a lady during a training exercise at a library in Washington, D.C.

Jesse Porter, a 58-year-old former police lieutenant, was detained after shooting Maryland resident Maurica Manyan, 25, at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library’s conference room.

Prior to the incident, he was instructing cops on how to wield batons, which often entails using a brightly coloured training pistol.

Porter is said to have grabbed his revolver from its holster, aimed it at the victim, and shot before the woman had a chance to remove her mask or fix her hair for a photo.

Porter allegedly responded, “I thought I had my training gun,” according to a witness. Is this why I did it? Is she okay?

In order to show how rapidly it could be done, the trainer allegedly drew the gun, ostensibly simulating an assault that they would have to fight against with the batons.

The incident happened at 3:30 pm in a training room on the 1800 block of Good Hope Road SE, where the library is located.

The city’s public library system has a dedicated team of special police officers who work full-time and are armed to protect the building.

Porter is charged with involuntary manslaughter. Porter works for a private contractor that trains security guards for the library.

The cousin of Maurica Manyan reportedly remarked, “There was no danger, there was no need for a firearm, and why pull the trigger,” during a vigil on Sunday, according to WUSA9.

“While inside the conference room, the teacher fired one bullet from a gun, striking the victim.

According to a statement issued by the police after the event on Thursday, a handgun was found nearby.

Maurica Manyan, 25, had been working as a special police officer within the DC Public Library's public safety division and had been on the force for less than a year

There were six persons in the room when the shooting took place, including additional police officers employed by the library.

Robert Contee, the chief of the Metropolitan Police, stated, “It’s not good practise.”

I’m not sure why the teacher used a live firearm in the training setting in this case. But doing this is not a good habit.

When police came and arrested Porter, he was one of two persons giving resuscitation to Manyan. Porter resigned from the police service in 2020.

NBC reports that Porter turned to the library officer as he was being escorted outside and apologised. I killed your policeman.

The officer was subsequently transported by emergency personnel to a nearby hospital, where she was later declared dead.

Less than a year had passed since Manyan joined the DC Public Library’s public safety section as a special police officer.

The use of live gunfire in the training exercise is still under review.
