Jesse Kriel ‘looks forward’ to replacing Lukhanyo Am

Jesse Kriel is not the most eloquent individual when approached by a multitude of South African hacks, but the Springbok utility-back does not need to talk this weekend if his actions speak for himself.

Kriel is tasked with filling the enormous shoes of the injured Lukhanyo Am against the Wallabies in the Boks’ comeback Rugby Championship match. Am, along with Handre Pollard, has been returned to his club for additional evaluation after it was disclosed on Wednesday that he is suffering from what appears to be a major knee injury.

Kriel, who last played for the Boks against New Zealand for less than 10 minutes until a concussion knocked him out earlier this month, has the monumental burden of creating forward momentum and executing the moves that will release the South African outside-backs from his No. 13 position.

When asked if he was feeling the strain of reproducing Am’s magic, a thoughtful Kriel responded that he was well-prepared.

“No, not at all,” he responded with assurance.

“Lukhanyo has set a high bar, and he is playing fantastic rugby, but I am well aware of my position, responsibilities, and contributions to the squad. I eagerly anticipate the task.”

According to the 53-Test veteran, it will not be difficult for the 28-year-old to reshape his centre partnership with Damian de Allende.

Kriel stated, “I am thrilled to rejoin Damian in the middle.

“Regardless of who plays in the midfield, all of the players get along and work well together. This is another excellent opportunity.

“Being buddies off the field makes a significant difference. It is always a pleasure to perform with players like Damian.

In recent matches, Kriel has played on the wing the majority of the time. On Saturday, at 11.30 a.m. (kickoff) at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney against the Wallabies, he will play outside center, his preferred position.

During his limited appearances in the Green and Gold over the past few months, Kriel has had little impact on the game when positioned at the back of the defense. However, the move back to the midfield may have a good effect on his performance.

With De Allende on his inside, there is little cause for concern about the duo’s defensive ability, and both players are strong ball-carriers, albeit not the best passers. The only genuine concern will be Kriel’s fitness for competition.

This Saturday, it will be intriguing to observe how flyhalf Damian Willemse and fullback Willie le Roux move the midfield combination forward.
