The Islanders have scored special teams goals in consecutive games for the first time since Mathew Barzal’s injury just over a week ago. The power play had previously gone 0-for-10 and struggled even with Barzal, ranking 28th in the league. However, with their strength on the penalty kill, ranked sixth at 82.42 per cent, the power play has the potential to turn special teams into a real weapon for the team.

Brock Nelson was pleased with the power play’s performance, saying they did a good job getting a couple of looks, even though Anders Lee’s opening goal on Sunday was ruled out for a high stick. The penalty-kill unit has been operating at full tilt and has scored four times this season.

Zach Parise, Anders Lee, Hudson Fasching, and Brock Nelson all hail from Minnesota, where the Islanders will play the Wild on Tuesday night. Parise played nine seasons with the Wild before being bought out of his contract in 2021. Nelson reached a career-high with his 60th point on Sunday and has points in 16 of 17 games, becoming the highest-scoring Islanders player since Barzal in 2019-20.

The Islanders did not practice on Monday.
