Sanctuary State California and Governor Gavin Newsom Investigate “State-Sanctioned Kidnapping” of Migrants Arriving in Sacramento Church Without Warning
Sixteen Venezuelan and Colombian migrants who entered the US through the southern border and into Texas were transported by a chartered plane to California and left outside a church in Sacramento, causing concern and raising questions about their treatment.
The migrants, carrying only a backpack’s worth of belongings each, were dropped off without advance warning outside the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento.
The incident has prompted investigations by Governor Gavin Newsom and migrant rights advocates to determine if the migrants were deceived and misled about their whereabouts.
Deceptive Actions and Human Smuggling Allegations
According to Eddie Carmona, the campaign director at PICO California, a faith-based community organizing group assisting the migrants, individuals representing a private contractor approached them outside a migrant center in El Paso, Texas.
These individuals offered to help the migrants find jobs and reach their final destinations.
However, Carmona claims that the migrants were lied to and intentionally deceived, with no knowledge of where they were after being dropped off in Sacramento.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg condemned the act, likening it to human smuggling and questioning the motives behind such actions.
Investigations and Calls for Accountability
Governor Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta met with the group of migrants and learned that they were transported from Texas to New Mexico before being flown by a private chartered jet to Sacramento.
The migrants presented documents purporting to be from the government of the state of Florida.
The California Department of Justice is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the migrants’ transportation and evaluating potential criminal or civil actions against those involved.
Newsom is also looking into any criminal wrongdoing, including who financed the group’s travel and whether false promises were made or if any laws were violated.
The focus is on ensuring the migrants are treated with respect and dignity as they pursue their immigration cases.
Outcry and Support for Migrants
Local community leaders and religious figures have expressed their dismay and support for the migrants.
They describe the situation as a moral travesty and emphasize the importance of treating these individuals, who are simply seeking better lives for their families, with compassion and fairness.
The incident has sparked public outcry and calls for better treatment of vulnerable immigrants.
Political Context and Border Policies
The incident in Sacramento comes in the context of political tensions and debates surrounding immigration policies.
Republican governors in Texas and Florida have been transporting migrants to Democratic strongholds and sanctuary cities without advance warning as a way to draw attention to what they view as the Biden administration’s failed border policies.
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has faced criticism for his strict stance on immigration, is scheduled to visit Sacramento for a fundraising breakfast, adding another layer of political significance to the situation.
Governor Newsom has been vocal in his opposition to DeSantis and has actively campaigned against him.
