There might be some setbacks in the camp of the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the seat of the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly, Godswill Akpabio.
This could be attributed to the alleged silent war ongoing between President Bola Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, as reported by Naija News.
Adamu’s Lack of Concern for Opposition Faced by Akpabio
Strong indications suggest that Adamu is not concerned or bothered about the opposition faced by Akpabio from other aspirants of the party who have refused to step down for party supremacy to prevail.
It has been gathered that both the President and Adamu have not held any one-on-one meetings after his inauguration, fueling speculations that this cold war between the two elephants can affect Akpabio’s emergence.
Alleged Cold War Hindering Discipline and Party Supremacy
According to The Whistler, it was this alleged cold war between the two that made Adamu reluctant to call for and enforce discipline among all candidates within the party who opposed the President’s choice.
Additionally, it was learned that Akpabio attempted to meet with Adamu over the weekend to seek his support in devising means for opposing candidates to step down, but his efforts were in vain.
Adamu’s Lack of Concern for Principal Positions
Speculation within the APC suggests that Adamu is less concerned about who emerges as the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives because they are not his preferred choices for those principal positions.
This is in line with the accusations made by the North West Zonal Chairman of the APC, Salihu Moh. Lukman, who claimed that Adamu was working against the party’s zoning arrangement.
NWC Members Focused on Ministerial Appointments
To worsen matters, sources within the party have revealed that members of the NWC are currently busy lobbying for ministerial appointments, thus showing less concern about who emerges in which position.
Consequently, concerted efforts were made on Sunday to nullify the strongest candidate opposing Akpabio, Abdul-Aziz Yari, by co-opting his ally, Orji Uzor Kalu, the immediate Chief Whip of the Senate.
Lack of Interest from APC’s NWC
A member of the Murkta Betara camp expressed that the National Working Committee of the APC is not bothered because the party’s announced choices were those selected by the President.
The source emphasized that the party could have shown more interest if it had a say in the matter.
Efforts to Align Adamu’s Perception with Party’s Goals
However, a member of the Akpabio camp stated that efforts are still ongoing to ensure that the party’s National Chairman sees “the project as his and the party’s rather than the president’s.”
It is crucial for him to adopt this perspective, according to the source.
