Inflation in Italy in June rose to 8% in annual terms | the highest rate since January 1986

The annual rate of inflation in Italy increased to 8% in June, which is the highest rate since January 1986. The Italian Institute of Statistics distributed these preliminary estimates on Friday (ISTAT).

“In June, inflation accelerated again and reached a level (+8.0%) not seen since January 1986 (when it was +8.2%),” the document says.

At the same time, experts note that inflation is increasingly observed not only in the energy sector, but also in other “commodity sectors, both in the sphere of goods and in the sphere of services.”

Consequently, the cost of the consumer basket increased by 8.3 percent as a result of the accelerating spike in food prices (also the highest figure since January 1986).

Inflation will reach 6.2 percent in 2022, according to the Italian Central Bank (Bankitalia), and could reach 8 percent if Russian energy supplies are cut off during the summer.
