Level Playing Field Commitment
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has affirmed its commitment to maintaining a level playing field for all political parties and candidates participating in the upcoming off-cycle Governorship elections on November 11 in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the electoral body’s dedication to ensuring a fair and transparent process.
No INEC-Endorsed Candidates
Addressing the media in Abuja, Professor Yakubu clarified that INEC does not endorse any candidate for the elections.
He highlighted the paramount responsibility of the Commission to safeguard the electoral process, emphasizing its impartiality. The statement aims to assure voters and stakeholders that INEC remains neutral in the political landscape.
Unprecedented Simultaneous Elections
The upcoming off-cycle elections mark a historic occasion, with 5,169,692 Nigerians holding Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) expected to participate in the polls.
This simultaneous election in three different geo-political zones—North Central (Kogi), South East (Imo), and South South (Bayelsa)—adds a unique dimension to the electoral landscape.
INEC’s Role in Safeguarding Democracy
Professor Mahmood Yakubu urged INEC officials, both regular and ad-hoc, to uphold the highest standards of patriotism and professionalism.
He reiterated that INEC operates independently of political affiliations, emphasizing the Commission’s overarching responsibility to safeguard the democratic process and provide an unbiased platform for electoral activities.
