Image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows galaxies merging 671 million light-years away

Friday, NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) unveiled an image depicting the collision of two galaxies.

The Arp-Madore 417-391 galaxy merger is located 671 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus.

It was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and is the consequence of two galaxies being warped and twisted together by gravity.

Their centers were left nestled next to one another.

This image was captured by the telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys, and according to the ESA, the instrument is ideal for searching the ancient universe for galaxies and galaxy clusters.

The Arp-Madore catalog is a compilation of enigmatic galaxies spanning the southern sky.

The image is derived from a selection of Hubble observations meant to generate a list of promising targets for subsequent observations with the international James Webb Space Telescope and other ground-based telescopes.

Astronomers selected a list of unseen galaxies for Hubble to examine.
