Illinois guard and forward Matthew Mayer experienced “caffeine poisoning” from consuming six Monster energy drinks while playing video games on Sunday after his team’s loss to No. 13 Ohio State 60-72.

Mayer was sick for two days and only returned to practice on Wednesday, ahead of Thursday’s game against Michigan. Mayer shared that he usually drinks one energy drink but had five after the game because he likes the “caffeine-induced euphoria” to play video games.

Mayer’s over-caffeination is unlikely to affect his playing time, and he seems ready and willing to get back out on the court. Mayer is averaging 12.6 points per game this season and is a starter for Illinois.
