Captain Roger Lanier of the Moscow Police Department was adamant that the investigation into the murders of University of Idaho students was nearing its conclusion, insisting that investigators will “eventually” identify the killer despite the passage of a month without the identification of a suspect or motives.
Lanier stated in a Facebook video that police receive a significant number of credible tips daily.
“These suggestions help us in a variety of ways, from clearing up rumors about individuals to advancing some of the hypotheses we’re working on,” he said.
Lanier stated, “The next step is to continue doing what we’re doing, delete the material that we know will not be pertinent to the inquiry, and collect all the fresh information.”
He continued, “Eventually, we’ll zero in on exactly what occurred and who committed the crime.”
The captain also revealed when he learned of the heinous incident at the off-campus residence where Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, were murdered.

“I received a call at home. “It occurred on a Sunday afternoon, and it took me a while to recall,” he recounted. “I had to seriously consider what I had just heard. Four murders in Moscow, Idaho were so atypical.”
Students were already standing outside and crying when he arrived at the horrific scene on King Road.
Lanier stated, “The situation was not chaotic, but it was really solemn.”
A month after the murders of four students, law enforcement has yet to identify a suspect.

According to him, this was the first homicide case in the city in seven years, and it was the first “serious crime scene” that many of his younger officers had ever encountered.
“It was an emotionally draining day,” Lanier stated.
According to him, the Idaho State Police and the FBI joined the investigation, which was too complex for his agency to manage alone.
“The teamwork has been wonderful. It can be daunting at times, but there are so many knowledgeable people. “Someone usually steps forward and fills the vacant position,” the captain stated.
Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were found fatally stabbed.
The “most aggravating” aspect of their work, according to Lanier, has been the prevalence of rumors and speculation, which have led to death threats and delayed the investigation.
“We find ourselves not just hunting down rumors and attempting to dispel them, but also receiving tips that are more focused on the rumor and not the facts,” he explained.
In a statement, police requested that the public “maintain a focus on the official facts” presented by the agency.
“Over the previous four weeks, rumors and conjecture have caused members of the public to give tips based on speculations rather than actual case material,” it stated.
“Rumors and suspicion have also damaged the victims’ family, friends, and classmates. In certain circumstances, this has led to harassment and threats against potentially involved people,” the statement continued.
“Anyone participating in threats or harassment, whether in person, online, or otherwise, must be aware that they may face criminal penalties,” the report concluded.
