Today in Dublin, there is a significant police operation going on as the prosecution gets ready to present Gerry “The Monk” Hutch for trial.
Hutch, 59, is scheduled to go on trial at the Special Criminal Court for the 2016 shooting at the Regency Hotel that resulted in David Byrne’s death.
Byrne, the younger brother of Liam Byrne, who authorities have named as the leader of the Kinahan gang’s activities in Ireland, was killed by AK-style rifle-wielding gunmen during a quarrel.
Daniel Kinahan, the presumed target of the gunshot, and Liam are said to have been at the hotel that day, but the two managed to flee. In light of rumors that his son is dating the footballer’s daughter, Liam was recently seen out having fun with Steven Gerard.
Former Sinn Fein councillor Jonathan Dowdall is anticipated to testify against 59-year-old Hutch during the trial.
Armed police were seen at the court today, and according to the Irish Independent, they will accompany Hutch from Wheatfield Prison to the dock.
The courthouse will also have plainclothes cops present, and sniffer dogs will be used to search the premises beforehand for explosives and weapons.
Additionally, armed patrols will be sent out to monitor the residences of top Hutch gang members.
In order to avoid conflicts between the Hutch and Kinahan clans, who are anticipated to participate, public order authorities will also be present.
