According to a letter filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been charged with federal income tax evasion and illegal possession of a firearm.

However, it was revealed on Tuesday that he has reached an agreement with the Justice Department to resolve the charges.

Under the agreement, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to misdemeanor tax offenses and is expected to negotiate a resolution with prosecutors regarding the felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user.

While it is somewhat uncommon to resolve a federal criminal case simultaneously with the filing of charges, it is not entirely unprecedented, according to U.S. legal experts.

This agreement brings an end to a lengthy investigation by the Justice Department into the President’s second son, who has openly acknowledged his struggles with addiction following the death of his brother Beau in 2015.

The agreement also spares the White House from the potential distraction of a trial and the resulting media attention.

The Biden administration has made efforts to distance itself from any perceived interference in Justice Department proceedings.

Meanwhile, congressional Republicans continue their own investigations into Hunter Biden’s business dealings, scrutinizing foreign payments and other aspects of his finances.

These developments come in the wake of a separate case where former President Donald Trump was indicted on 37 counts for mishandling classified documents on his Florida estate.

Both cases carry significant political implications.

President Joe Biden has faced scrutiny regarding his son’s business ventures and drug addiction.

It is not unprecedented for a U.S. president to be confronted with legal issues involving a family member.

Former President Jimmy Carter’s brother, Billy, was investigated for accepting money from the Libyan government while working as a lobbyist.

Similarly, Bill Clinton’s half-brother, Roger, served prison time for cocaine dealing.

The resolution of Hunter Biden’s case brings some clarity to the ongoing investigations surrounding his activities, although it is likely to continue to be a topic of political interest and scrutiny.
