Hengameh Ghaziani and Katayoun Riahi imprisoned for defying government

High-profile Hengameh Ghaziani and Katayoun Riahi, two Iranian actresses, were jailed after openly expressing their support for anti-Iranian government protesters.

The BBC, citing Iran’s national news agency Irna, claimed that the ladies were accused of conspiring against Iran’s rulers.

Sunday, Ghaziani posted an Instagram video of herself sans a headscarf on a public street in Tehran, the nation’s capital. The conduct is forbidden in the extremely strict Islamic nation.

This comes as Iran has burst in protests against the country’s morality police following the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was imprisoned for not wearing a head covering and then executed. As a result of the government’s response, protestors were also slain.

“This might be my final post. “From now on, if something were to happen to me, know that I will always be with the Iranian people till my last breath,” the 52-year-old captioned her Instagram photo.

Sunday, the Iranian prosecutor’s office also issued a warrant for the arrest of the renowned actress Riahi.

She was “one of the first actors to appear in public without the required headscarf after the murder of Mafsa Amini,” according to BBC journalist Ali Damedani.

After Ms. Amini’s death in September, the administration has been tormented by irate people’ displays of disobedience.

The young Kurdish woman was reportedly murdered three days after being detained by Iranian morality police.

The opposition has even reached the FIFA World Cup. Before their match against England, the Iranian players mounted a unique protest by remaining silent throughout the playing of their national anthem.
