James Arthur Haslam III was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States on March 9, 1954 (he is 68 years old). He is the son of Jim and Cynthia Haslam (parents) (mother). He is the older brother of former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam. During his time at the University of Tennessee, Haslam shared a room with Bob Corker, who later became a senator from Tennessee. He is a member of the fraternity Sigma Chi.

Career
1976 marked the beginning of Jimmy Haslam’s career at Pilot Corporation. Haslam was appointed vice president of sales, development, and operations in 1980. At the time, Pilot had 100 convenience outlets and sold around 125 million gallons of fuel annually. In 1996 – the same year that Haslam was chosen president and chief executive officer — Pilot operated 96 travel centers and 50 convenience stores, and its total gallon sales surpassed $1.2 billion.

In 2001, Pilot Corporation reached another significant milestone when it merged with Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC to become Pilot Travel Centers LLC. In 2008, Pilot Corporation announced that CVC Capital Partners had bought 49.8% of Pilot Travel Centers LLC, permitting the sale of Pilot Travel Centers by Marathon Petroleum Company (previously Marathon Ashland Petroleum). In 2015, the Haslam family purchased all of CVC Capital Partners’ corporate shares. Pilot Corporation continues to completely own its convenience store operations. Pilot Travel Centers LLC merged with Flying J Inc. in 2010. In 2012, Pilot Flying J bought Western Petroleum and a majority stake in Maxum Petroleum, as well as Maxum Enterprises LLC, doing business as Pilot Logistics Services.

Pilot Logistics Services and Thomas Petroleum joined in 2014 to establish Pilot Thomas Logistics. Pilot Flying J subsidiary Pilot Thomas Logistics is one of North America’s most rapidly expanding energy logistics companies. Pilot Flying J is one of the top 10 largest privately held enterprises in the United States, with over 24,000 employees. The Pilot Flying J network offers clients access to over 70,000 truck parking spots, 4,800 showers, and 4,300 diesel lanes with DEF at the pump.

In April 2013, the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a search warrant and affidavit describing the Pilot Flying J chain’s five-year fraud operation. In accordance with a Criminal Enforcement Agreement, the business repaid affected customers and agreed to pay a $92 million fine.

In 2008, Jimmy Haslam acquired a minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2012, he negotiated a deal with Browns owner Randy Lerner to acquire the team for $1 billion. Forbes magazine valued the Browns at $977 million in 2011, ranking them twentieth in the NFL. NFL regulations restrict ownership of two clubs, so Haslam surrendered his Steelers stake. The NFL’s 32 franchises unanimously authorized the Haslams’ purchase of the Browns on October 12; the sale was finalized thirteen days later.

 

Since officially taking over the Browns seven games into the 2012 season and through the end of the 2020 regular season, Jimmy Haslam has a 44-94-1 record as team owner (including a 0-16 record in 2017), but he had his first winning season in 2020 when the Browns went 11-5 and he won his first postseason game as Browns owner when they defeated the Steelers 48-37 in the Wild Card round of the 2020–21 NFL playoffs.

Late in 2018, it was reported that Jimmy Haslam had acquired the Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew from Anthony Precourt, who desired to relocate the team to Austin, Texas. Haslam, together with his wife Dee and former team physician Pete Edwards, became the club’s new owners on January 1, 2019, following the completion of a deal to purchase the club from Precourt. The 2020 MLS Cup was won by the Crew, giving Haslam his first major sports title as an owner.

Jimmy Haslam serves on the board of directors for Anderson Media Corporation as part of his civic engagement. He has also served on the boards of the Greater Knoxville United Way, Knoxville’s Lakeshore Park, and the National Association of Truck Stop Operators (NATSO).
