A groom and five guests who attended a wedding in Nigeria have unexpectedly died, while the bride and seven others are being treated in the hospital.

Obinna Dieke, 33, and his wife Nebechi were married on Friday in the southern Nigerian city of Enugu in front of their friends and family.

14 of the guests, including the newlyweds, were found unconscious the following morning with frothy discharge around their mouths, according to local authorities.

The wounded were transported to the hospital, but Obinna and five others were declared dead upon arrival. Nebechi and seven additional visitors are now being treated in the hospital.

It is unknown what caused the deaths, although residents have hypothesized that it was either food poisoning or carbon dioxide poisoning from a generator carried inside the home.

The six victims will undergo an autopsy, according to the police, to ascertain the cause of their deaths.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests returned to their family home for a celebration.

Daniel Ndukwe, a police spokesman, told the Nigerian website Premium Times that when none of the wedding guests appeared from the residence the following day, the neighbors broke down the front door.

The visitors were discovered comatose with foamy discharge emanating from their mouths.

Six of them were declared dead and placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the others are responding to treatment, Ndukwe said.

A village leader stated that Obinnaa, Nebechi, and their wedding guests had returned to their family home the night before their bodies were discovered for a party.

14 of the guests, including the newlyweds, were found unconscious the following morning with frothy discharge around their mouths, according to local authorities.

The wounded were taken to an Enugu hospital, but Obinna and five others were confirmed dead upon arrival. Nebechi and seven other visitors are currently hospitalized.

Unidentified leader stated that he believes they perished from carbon monoxide poisoning from a portable generator that they had taken inside because of the rain.

Portable generators emit lethal levels of carbon monoxide and must never be used inside or too close to a home.

The community leader stated, “It was raining and a generator was outside.”

The generator was moved into the corridor. Since they had been drinking and were unaware of the consequences of moving the generator into the corridor, they fell asleep,’ he continued.

I believe that carbon monoxide may have filled the entire room. People that went to greet them in the morning were the ones who smashed down the door and discovered them unconscious,’ he claimed.

The event has been the subject of a police investigation.
