Greens senator Lidia Thorpehas admitted to having a romantic relationship with Rebels bikie head Dustin Martin’s uncle

Lidia Thorpe, a controversial Greens senator, has admitted to having a “brief” contact with the uncle of AFL player Dustin Martin, the Rebels bikie chief.

Ms. Thorpe asserts that she met Dean Martin, the former president of the Victoria branch of the Rebels, in early 2021 through the “Black activism” group.

“We remain friends and have worked together to campaign for the rights of First Nations peoples,” she told the ABC.

When it was reported that members of Ms. Thorpe’s staff were concerned about the relationship, the matter became public.

This issue arose as a result of Ms. Thorpe’s membership on a joint parliamentary law enforcement committee that received confidential briefings on criminal motorcycle gangs.

Martin resigned as president of the Rebels’ Victoria chapter in 2018 when his brother, Dustin Martin’s father Shane, was deported to New Zealand for gang ties. He has never been found guilty of a criminal offense.
