Green Lake Boathouse Construction Begins in 2022

Seattle Parks & Recreation is finalizing the building contract for the new Green Lake Community Boathouse at the Small Craft Center in Green Lake Park and expects construction to begin in mid-September 2022 and conclude in the fall of 2023.

The Green Lake walkway will be impacted by construction. During construction, the contractor and Seattle Parks & Recreation will endeavor to minimize the impact on the Green Lake Park route, and users will be required to follow detour signs. In addition, the existing structure will be shuttered and dismantled.

The new 10,800 SQ FT boathouse will boost program capacity through a combination of increased and more efficient boat storage space and additional classroom space. It will be totally accessible, allowing Seattle to begin its first public adaptive rowing program and expand its paracanoeing program. Additionally, Seattle Parks and Recreation’s specialized programs will be able to expand their work with persons with varying physical and cognitive capacities.

In addition, the new facility will have restrooms, locker rooms, locations for off-water education, and a meeting room for the community. The rebuilt boathouse will interact more effectively with Green Lake Park and the neighboring regularly traveled walking trail. Additionally, the project will renovate the current public bathrooms close to the path that are available to all park visitors.

Green Lake Crew, which is 74 years old, resides in the current Small Craft Center. It was founded by legendary UW rowing coach Al Ulbrickson in 1948 and is regarded to be the nation’s oldest public youth rowing program. Long before Title IX, in 1963, the crew launched a girls’ program, another first for the region.

It is also home to the Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club, which dates back 50 years. It is the only public program in Seattle that offers both competitive and leisure paddling and canoeing.

Over the years, these programs have exposed tens of thousands of Seattle youngsters to rowing and paddling, opening doors to a broad community and launching some to national and international prominence.

Volunteers from the community, in collaboration with the Green Lake Rowing Advisory Council, the Associated Recreation Council, and the Seattle Canoe and Kayak Club, lobbied for the project and secured public and private funding. Private donations and grants from the Land & Water Conservation Fund, Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, King County, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Major Projects Challenge Fund are contributing to the funding of this project.
