Grandmother and toddler hit by California driver in crosswalk

A woman and her grandson were crossing a calm road in San Jose, California, when they were struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

The 68-year-old grandmother is currently in intensive care with three broken ribs and a fractured shoulder, according to the mother of the three-year-old boy.

Tuesday at approximately 5:40 p.m., a home security camera captured the moment a dark gray 2012 Mazda 3 struck a woman pushing a stroller containing her grandson.

The boy is recovering with a scar and a contusion on his head, according to his mother. The police have initiated an investigation to locate and identify the vehicle’s driver.

The mother of the three-year-old exclaimed, “I couldn’t believe it!” I am unable to imagine how anyone could drive in such a manner. This is dreadful.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Sierra road, a four-lane road connecting East San Jose Foothills and East Capitol Expressway, and Mauna Kea Lane.

Outside of a residence near the intersection, security cameras captured the video.

There resides Yong Oin, who stated, “I know her.” She takes her grandchildren to the high school track every day on this route.

“Cars like this don’t even stop,” she stated.

Residents residing along the heavily traveled section of Sierra Road believe that a simple crosswalk is insufficient for crossing the road safely.

Oin stated, “A traffic signal is superior.”

Police in San Jose are requesting assistance to locate the driver. Anyone with information should contact the police department at 408-277-4680.
