Grace Tame confronts her abuser, Nicolaas Bester, during their court appearance

Grace Tame, the former Australian of the Year, attended the Hobart Magistrates Court to witness her abuser, Nicolaas Ockert Bester, plead not guilty to three charges of using social media platform Twitter to menace, harass or cause offence directed at her.

The alleged public posts were made in April, July and August of last year. The case was adjourned for contest mention on April 27 and Bester’s bail was continued.

During the court appearance, Ms Tame was accompanied by her partner, Max Heerey, and several other supporters. Bester, who did not speak to the media outside the court, was charged by the police in October and first appeared in court in December.

It should be noted that Bester was previously convicted in 2011 and sentenced to two years and 10 months in jail for abusing Ms Tame when she was his student and possessing child exploitation material.

Ms Tame has been a vocal advocate for survivors of abuse and their ability to speak out.
