Governor Ron DeSantis Extends Property Tax Deadline for Hurricane Ian-Affected Communities

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Executive Order (EO) 22-242 to suspend property tax payment deadlines in areas affected by Hurricane Ian. The EO applies to residential and commercial real estate that has been damaged or rendered otherwise uninhabitable. The Executive Order can be found here.

Governor Ron DeSantis stated that Floridians whose homes and businesses were destroyed by Hurricane Ian should not have to worry about their property taxes. “By means of this Executive Order, we are giving temporary relief until the Legislature can return to Tallahassee to adopt more lasting solutions for property taxes, provide greater economic assistance to Southwest Florida, and make important reforms to the property insurance industry. I look forward to collaborating with our legislators to discover new solutions, and I am pleased that our legislature is eager and able to address these concerns in the near future.”

Brevard, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Monroe, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, and Volusia are the counties included in the sequence.

Additionally, the Governor indicated that he is working with the Legislature to convene a December Special Session to address property tax issues and bring economic relief to Southwest Florida homeowners. In addition, the Special Session will discuss ways to stabilize Florida’s property insurance market by introducing more competition and measures that reduce consumer pricing.
