A Unique and Absurdist Comedy – I’m a Virgo

Some people are fortunate, while others find themselves as a 13-foot-tall young black man trying to navigate through a post-Trump America.

The protagonist of the Prime Video series, I’m a Virgo, named Cootie, faces this challenge.

Interestingly, Cootie’s name is reminiscent of an ailment, which may vary depending on one’s primary school experience.

Unconventional Genre and Creative Freedom:

Described as an absurdist comedy, I’m a Virgo defies easy categorization.

Writer/director Boots Riley, known for his work on the black comedy film Sorry to Bother You, ventures into uncharted territory.

He fearlessly incorporates elements from various genres, creating a wholly unique space for the series.

Unconventional Storytelling:

In a television landscape where instant gratification is often prioritized, I’m a Virgo stands out with its distinctive concept, much like Cootie’s towering presence among average-sized individuals.

The initial scenes introduce us to the giant baby, cradled by Aunt Lafrancine and Uncle Martisse, without any explanation.

Suddenly, we find a 19-year-old Cootie accidentally demolishing their relatively tiny home.

Additionally, Oakland, California, the series’ setting, is patrolled by an ethically dubious caped crusader called The Hero, a mere background detail.

Unveiling Cootie’s Journey:

The narrative initially avoids delving into Cootie’s personal issues or secrets within his metaphorical giant closet.

Instead, the story progresses to the present day, where Cootie seeks shelter within his adoptive family’s home.

Martisse sternly warns Cootie that the world isn’t ready for him, showcasing an ominous scrapbook detailing tragic ends met by giants over the years.

However, despite the warning, Cootie eventually steps out and befriends a group of teen activists who, despite their own insecurities, bond with him.

Jharrel Jerome’s Outstanding Performance:

Jharrel Jerome, previously acclaimed for his emotionally charged role in Moonlight, elevates his acting prowess to tackle the challenging role of Cootie.

Rather than emulating the somber Giant from the 2017 Basque drama, Jerome portrays Cootie more like Peter Selles’s Chance in Being There—a man whose knowledge is derived solely from television.

Jerome’s portrayal is funny, charming, and likable, making viewers invested in the show’s unpredictable narrative shifts.

Ever-changing and Surprising Plot:

Just as viewers start to grasp the essence of the series, I’m a Virgo takes unexpected turns.

Trippy snippets from a popular cartoon called Parking Tickets, the enigmatic presence of The Hero, or the sudden immersion into a secondary character’s backstory disrupt the flow and demand attention, sometimes occupying an entire episode.

Avoiding Stereotypical Tropes:

I’m a Virgo successfully sidesteps the clichéd approaches often used in stories about teenagers with unique characteristics.

The narrative skillfully avoids a climactic prom scene typically seen in stories like Carrie, as Cootie is too old for high school.

Additionally, the series steers clear of becoming a basketball drama like Teen Wolf by promptly eliminating Cootie’s dominance in sports.

Fresh Perspectives on Teenage Experiences:

While the topic of teenage desire may be inevitable, I’m a Virgo takes a refreshing approach.

Instead of assigning Cootie a generic crush with inexplicable emotions, Olivia Washington shines as Flora, a burger flipper with a captivating story that surpasses his own.

Final Thoughts and Expectations:

With only three episodes viewed, I write with both hope and genuine anticipation that the remaining episodes will bring clarity.

I anticipate that The Hero will serve a purpose, Parking Tickets will tie into the overall narrative, and I’m a Virgo will surpass the teen superhero drama Misfits from Channel 4.

Amidst the humor, including toilet and innuendo jokes, political undertones and hints of satire anchor this superb and original drama that aims for greatness.
