Frenchman admits strangling his wife to death and chopping her head off, before hiding it in Paris park

Youcef Matoug, a 50-year-old Frenchman, has admitted to strangling his wife, Assia Matoug, 46, to death, before chopping off her head and hiding it in the Buttes-Chaumont Park in Paris.

On January 30, Matoug killed his wife before dismembering her body and hiding it in the park. He took six days to report her missing from their home in Montreuil to the police.

Her mobile phone remained off, and no one had heard from her until gardeners discovered her body parts in the park. On February 13, they found her pelvis in a plastic bag in a park dustbin, and her head was found in another waste bag on February 14.

Matoug was charged with “the murder of his spouse, violation of integrity, and concealment of a corpse.” The couple has three children aged eight, 14, and 16, all of whom are now in the care of their extended family, who are from Algeria.

Matoug, a former supermarket worker, had been unemployed for several months, while his wife did charity work. One of their neighbors said that there was no sign of friction within the family.

During police interviews, Matoug admitted that he had not intended to kill his wife, but that an argument had gotten out of hand. He wanted his wife to end her days in “one of the most beautiful parks in Paris,” which is why he hid her body parts in the Buttes-Chaumont Park. His defense barrister, Dominique Beyreuther-Minkov, said that Matoug was devastated, but he has always denied intending to kill his wife.

Movies and TV series like Emily in Paris have featured the Buttes-Chaumont Park, where the crime occurred.
