NEW YORK — Frances Tiafoe is dominating the world of tennis.

The 24-year-old defeated the ninth-ranked player in the world. Andrey Rublev was defeated 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The native of Maryland is the first American man to reach the US Open quarterfinals since Andy Roddick reached the championship in 2006.

Patrick Mouratoglou, one of the sport’s most renowned coaches who has worked with Serena Williams, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Coco Gauff, and Simona Halep, praised Tiafoe’s fascinating style of play.

Mouratoglou told Insider prior to Wednesday’s encounter, “Frances is incredible to see because he shares so much with the crowd.”

The French coach is devoted to expanding the sport of tennis and attracting new fans. He is aware that the sport’s fan base is primarily comprised of older individuals, and he believes the sport will need to change in order to attract younger generations.

Early on in the COVID-19 epidemic, Mouratoglou established an alternate tennis league, Ultimate Tennis Showdown, in an effort to engage and attract younger fans to the sport.

“I try to consider the game’s appeal in terms of its popularity,” he remarked. “We live in a world with a great deal of competition nowadays. I mentioned social media, streaming platforms, video games, eSports, in addition to all other sports. Now there are increasingly more sports every day, in addition to television, which still exists.

“Therefore, the competition is intense, and we must carve out a niche and win over new fans,” he continued. And for new fans, we must provide the most entertaining show imaginable.

He believes that Tiafoe, who defeated Rafael Nadal in a thrilling fourth-round match earlier in the week, is accomplishing precisely that.

The world’s No. 22 is one of the most athletic and electrifying players on tour, boasting a powerful serve and outstanding net play. He is the son of Sierra Leonean immigrants.

Best of all, according to Mouratoglou, he has no qualms about displaying his emotions and interacting with the fans.

“We have individuals that are entertaining to watch,” said Mouratoglou, adding, “It’s great for tennis and great for the show. Tiafoe is fantastic for the performance.”

The emerging star will now prepare for the semifinals on Friday, where he will face the victor of Wednesday’s match between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
