Football fan who attacked player at Northampton Town receives a 16-week prison sentence.

A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after entering the pitch at Northampton Town FC’s stadium, assaulting a player, and throwing a flare.

On May 18 of this year, while Northampton Town FC was playing Mansfield Town FC, there was an incident.

Northampton resident Paul Alexander Moss was charged with common assault, launching a missile into a football field, having a flare at a sports event, entering the field of play during a football game, and impeding a constable in the performance of their duty.

He appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court last week on Thursday June 30 and was handed a 16-week sentence and ordered to pay costs totalling £128.

He was also given a six-year football banning order.

The incident happened on May 18 this year when there was disorder at Northampton Town FC's match against Mansfield Town FC

Northamptonshire Police’s Dedicated Football Officer said: ‘All football fans, stadium staff, officials and players should be able to attend football matches in a safe environment.

‘They should not be subjected to the behaviour that Paul Moss showed that night and I hope this case shows the seriousness with which we take incidents such as these.

‘We will continue to work with Northampton Town FC to ban individuals who behave in this way.’
