Florentino Perez wants an ESL

Speaking to club members on Sunday, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez pushed for the creation of a European Super League once again.

Twelve of the top teams in Europe agreed to participate in a contentious new initiative in April 2021, but it failed due to considerable opposition from fans and the game’s regulatory authorities.

While other teams jumped ship, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus stuck it out. The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg will decide whether or not Uefa is operating as a monopoly by obstructing the proposal.

Perez informed Real members that “the Super League has never been sealed off with a definitive framework.” “We believe that it may alter based on various settings.

“Modernizing football is the Super League’s main goal. It is crucial to provide spectators with high-caliber games. Uefa is foolishly heading in the other direction with its reshaping and revamping of the Champions League.”

The Real director likened football to tennis, where the best players often compete against one another throughout the year.

What use does it serve to deny fans of important games, he questioned. “Over 40 times have (Rafa) Nadal and (Roger) Federer faced off. Is it boring that Nadal and (Novak) Djokovic have played 59 times?

“In 67 years, Liverpool and Real Madrid have only faced off nine times.”

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the head of Paris Saint-Germain and the European Club Association, was also targeted by Perez (ECA).

He said, “The ECA president claimed Real Madrid started the Super League out of a fear of competition.

“Perhaps we should remind him who Real Madrid is, the team with the most trophies in history.”

Some people took exception to Perez’s remarks, and La Liga president Javier Tebas criticized the Real president on Twitter.

“History will remember Florentino Perez as one of the finest club runners, but being a strong club runner does not automatically make one a good competitor,” Tebas wrote.

“Perez is saying things that may harm the other teams, even Real Madrid, without knowing it,”
