The Gregory River continues to experience major flooding, and floodwater heights in Burketown remain unstable, with the possibility of further changes. As a safety measure, 37 houses and 2 water pumping stations have been disconnected from power.
Unfortunately, the Burketown sewage and water treatment has been suspended at this time, adding to the challenges faced by residents. However, water reserves and food supplies are adequate, and continuous resupply efforts are being made.
Given the situation, residents are advised to conserve their water usage and closely follow advice from the Burketown Shire Council. The Council is monitoring the situation and providing regular updates to residents.
To ensure swift response to emergencies and provide necessary support, air assets have been deployed in the vicinity and are on standby for emergency rescues or personnel transport. Meanwhile, the Mount Isa District Disaster Coordination Centre is preparing for the recovery phase.
Due to the current hazardous conditions, it is still not safe for people to return to their homes. All displaced persons have been provided with suitable accommodation and are currently being supported by the Queensland Community Recovery Services.
The Mount Isa DDCC strongly recommends that all residents still in Burketown should stay in touch with the local police and council organizations, and immediately report any changes in their situation, feel unsafe, or have any concerns.
