Fired CNN host Chris Cuomo claims he ‘drinks too much’ to ‘settle’ his mind and ‘deal with emotions’ but says he is not an alcoholic


Chris Cuomo has acknowledged to drinking ‘too much,’ explaining that alcohol helps him ‘settle my mind’ and ‘deal with emotions.’

On The Chris Cuomo Project, the 52-year-old news anchor, who is renowned for his love of working out and showing the results in tight-fitting clothing, detailed his diet and workout regimen.

The podcast was released in July – seven months after Cuomo was fired from CNN – and is characterised as “a candid, unfiltered talk from his living room couch” in which Cuomo “opens up about his own mental health struggles, the stigma behind antidepressants, and why therapy is matters.”

Cuomo said that he did not feel he was an alcoholic, but that he believed he drank too much and was striving to cut down.

‘I drink too much,’ he said.

‘I’m thinking about that — mostly in terms of why I drink too much.

‘And I’m probably what people in the sobriety community would call a ‘normie’ but a hard drinker. I drink, often. And I definitely think it’s not always for the right reason.’

Since Mario started facing serious questions over the journalistic ethics of assisting his brother Andrew, the former governor of New York, with the media strategy for combating claims of sexual harassment, Cuomo has been a difficult year.

Cuomo was terminated from his position in December 2021, a decision that lost him over $15 million in compensation he would have received had he completed his contract.

In March of this year, wounded by the criticism of former colleagues such as Jake Tapper, he filed a $125 million lawsuit against CNN.

He just secured a deal to present a programme on News Nation for a salary of around $1 million per year, a sixth of his CNN income.

Cuomo said on Thursday that he resorted to alcohol to cope.

‘I think it’s to settle my mind,’ he said.

‘I think it’s to deal with emotions that — I’m not saying I’m an alcoholic, I don’t believe in abusing those terms.

‘But it’s something I’ve had to think about. And it’s something that I am thinking about and it’s something that I’m dealing with because my mental health has become an increasing aspect of my self-concern about how I can be my best.

‘I really believe that you know where your head is, is where your life goes.’
