The Cross River Command of the Federal Fire Service has revealed that fire incidents in Cross River State resulted in the destruction of property valued at N10.38 billion within a six-month period.
The State Controller of the Fire Service, Mrs. Olomola Olumayowa, provided this information during a press conference held in Calabar.
She emphasized the urgency with which the command responded to these incidents but highlighted the challenges faced due to a lack of necessary fire equipment.
Destruction of Property and Loss of Life:
Between January and June, the state recorded a total of 13 fire incidents, leading to extensive property damage.
The estimated value of the destroyed properties reached N10.38 billion.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries during these incidents.
Challenges Faced by the Fire Service:
Despite the command’s dedication to combating fire outbreaks, the lack of adequate fire equipment poses a significant hindrance.
Mrs. Olumayowa emphasized that not all routes are accessible by conventional fire appliances.
Therefore, the provision of mini firefighting equipment, specifically water tenders, is crucial for navigating challenging terrains.
This equipment would greatly enhance the effectiveness of the fire service in preventing further damage.
Need for Additional Fire Stations and Equipment:
To strengthen fire prevention and response capabilities, the Cross River Command of the Federal Fire Service urgently requires more fire stations in Calabar and its surrounding areas.
Presently, the state has only one fire engine, which is insufficient.
Mrs. Olumayowa suggested that these additional fire stations should be equipped with mini firefighting equipment to address the limitations faced by conventional fire appliances.
Moreover, the command also requires a tanker to accompany the fire engine, reducing the need for frequent refilling of water during firefighting operations.
Collaboration with Security Agencies:
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Mrs. Olumayowa appealed for increased cooperation between the fire service and security agencies in the state.
She emphasized that security agencies should continue to provide assistance during fire incidents.
The recent incident at Bogobiri, where fire service personnel faced aggression from the public, highlighted the necessity for additional support and protection from security agencies.
