Late-night TV and the internet mocked the concept as a Trump whim, but the former president had examined it privately and consulted his National Security Council.
After Lauder, the wealthy heir of Estee-Lauder, suggested it to Trump, he told his national security advisor, ‘A very, really experienced businessman believes we can acquire Greenland.’

Lauder mentioned the proposal early in his presidency and promised to talk with Denmark. The Danes disagreed.
