Historically, British Columbia has been known to have a big whale population due to its rich feeding areas.

This incredible clip captures the moment a humpback whale in British Columbia executed a sequence of spectacular breaches within meters away from a father and son kayaking with their dog.

On August 9 in Desolation Sound, Discovery Islands, Ryan, 45, his son Aidan, 19, and his nine-year-old Australian Shepherd Shelby heard the sound of a humpback whale approaching.

Ryan began recording immediately in the hopes of capturing the moment the whale breached the surface of the water.

However, the father and his family were in for a truly spectacular nature spectacle as the mighty beast thundered through the surface three times in rapid succession.

Shelby, a nine-year-old Australian Shepherd, joined the father and son kayaking duo on their excursion.

After the third breach, the whale submerged and swam toward the open ocean while Ryan and Aidan sat in their watercraft, absolutely awestruck.

Ryan remarked, ‘We were so astonished and originally were grateful that we weren’t crushed and were okay.

Then we were awestruck and incredibly grateful to be so near to such a wonderful creature.

There are humpback whales in waters all over the world.

They have one of the world’s longest annual migrations.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it is difficult to assess population numbers since some populations must travel 5,000 miles from tropical breeding grounds to cooler, more abundant feeding areas (NOAA).

The whale breached three times before to leaving the water.

Twelve of the 14 unique populations are predicted to have more than 2,000 humpback whales, whereas two populations are estimated to have fewer than 2,000 humpback whales.

British Columbia is regarded as an ideal destination for individuals who like to observe extraordinary marine life.

It is well known that humpbacks are extremely loyal to their feeding grounds, and that the northern British Columbia region is frequented by between 3,000 and 5,000 whales.

Marine experts believe that whales and dolphins communicate by leaping out of the water and generating splashes that other creatures can hear from miles away.
