Former New York governor David Paterson stated on Sunday that Mayor Eric Adams deserves appreciation for calling out the Biden administration’s lack of financial support for New York and other cities as they deal with a big surge of migrants.

“Washington is what’s pushing these mayors not to turn their backs on the migrants, but Washington isn’t helping them,” Paterson remarked during an appearance on WABC Radio’s “The Cats Roundtable,” referring to remarks made by the mayor earlier this week.

Adams, who spent the weekend traveling the US-Mexico border, estimated that the migrant problem might cost New York City between $1.5 and $2 billion.

Paterson revealed on Sunday: “The mayor introduced his budget, which would be $103 billion, and he spoke about all the aid we gave to migrants and pleaded with Washington for more funds.”

Without accounting for the estimated cost of the ongoing migrant crisis, Adams’ new budget recommended cuts to virtually every city agency.

The city faces a “perfect storm” of declining revenues and mounting costs, according to local authorities. This year, it is anticipated that the number of migrants seeking sanctuary in New York would approach 100,000.

Adams called the situation “unsustainable” on Friday, but refrained from naming Biden.

“This humanitarian crisis began with violence and instability in South America, and American political dynamics are accelerating it,” he stated.

“I believe it is necessary for the national government to implement a decompression strategy to ensure that these asylum seekers are dispersed throughout the country.”
