England Set to Welcome Best Qualified International Teachers and Promises to Help Them Settle In

A new, more equitable approach for bringing the finest international teachers to England will be introduced, together with assistance to help foreign teachers integrate into the classroom.

As part of the government’s commitment to guarantee that every pupil is taught by a great teacher, the best teachers from around the world will be supported to work in English schools starting in 2023.

International teachers who want to teach in English schools will have to meet a new set of uniform requirements, rather than having their eligibility determined by the country in which they received their education. Teachers from all over the world will benefit from the shift, which will make it more fair and easy for the top teachers in the world to work in English schools.

New and high standards will be introduced under plans announced today (Friday, June 10), including the requirements to have concluded a teacher training program of at least the same academic standard as that in England and to show a proficient level of English.

The move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that every classroom has an outstanding teacher, as well as a commitment to provide 500,000 high-quality training opportunities by 2024 to level the playing field and ensure that a child’s location has no barrier on the opportunities available to them or the quality of their education.

Robin Walker, the Minister of Education, stated that he wants England to be the most appealing place in the world to work as a teacher, which means world-class education, high standards, and, most importantly, opportunities.

He further said that the outstanding professors are responsible for training “the next generation of engineers, mathematicians, artists, linguists, and doctors”, and the knowledge the country relies on should not be limited by geographical location.

“That’s why our plans to make it simpler for high quality teachers from all over the world to teach in our classrooms are so important, and why I am excited to welcome the best international teachers to our schools, ultimately to make sure each and every young person has the education and opportunities they deserve, ” he said.

Teachers who are new to England and are in the early stages of their careers will receive the same induction as teachers in England, including compressed timetables, access to mentorship, and professional development. As part of the Government’s Early Career Framework, this support will assist them as they begin their teaching careers and ensuring that every teacher meets the high standards expected.

Teachers from a list of 39 nations, including Europe, the United States, and Australia, are currently recognized by the existing system. Teachers from other nations must retrain or obtain work as an unqualified teacher, after which they must undergo compensated evaluation of their teaching practice.

Nations in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are among the 39 countries where qualified teachers are currently eligible for QTS.

On Friday, June 10th, more information, including the full set of requirements that overseas teachers must achieve, will be available on GOV.UK.
