Emma Carey had ’10 seconds to survive’ during skydiving accident

Excited 20-year-old Australian woman realized she had ’10 seconds to live’ as she plunged 14,000 feet on a skydive with a BROKEN parachute and unconscious instructor.

Emma Carey fell 14,000 feet in a 2013 skydiving accident in Switzerland.

Her parachute failed to deploy, and she and her teacher crashed to the ground.

The fall rendered her a paraplegic, but a year later she astounded doctors by walking again. Carey, 20, said she realized during the fall that she had only ’10 seconds to live.’

During a bizarre skydiving accident, a young Australian woman revealed the heart-wrenching moment she realized she just had 10 seconds left to live.

In 2013, Emma Carey, who is now 29 years old, nearly died when her parachute entangled and strangled her skydiving instructor, leading them to plummet 14,000 feet from the sky.

On the sixth day of her three-month-long abroad vacation, she and her best friend Jemma Mrdak decided to skydive in Switzerland.

When the adrenaline junkie noticed her parachute flapping in front of her instead of above her, she realized something was severely wrong.

On the fifth day of her three-month-long abroad journey, she and her best friend Jemma Mrdak decided to skydive in Switzerland.

When her instructor eventually launched their parachute, it became entangled with the strings of the safety chute, choking him to the point of unconsciousness.

Ms. Carey told A Current Affair: “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my god, Jemma is going to have to find me on the ground.

I recall thinking about my family, and the predominant emotion I recall is remorse for not having fully embraced my life up to that moment.

She absorbed the most of the impact of the fall, falling on her back with the teacher on top of her.

Ms. Carey attempted to roll him off of her and got distressed when she realized she had no sensation below the waist.

Ms. Mrdak stated, “The first thing I noticed was her lying on her stomach with blood all over her face, sobbing and shouting that she couldn’t feel her legs.”

Ms. Carey was transported to the hospital, where she underwent back and pelvic surgery. The two fractures in her spine rendered her paraplegic, but she is now able to walk again.

Carey has remained optimistic throughout the journey, and she now views the horrific moment when she thought she was about to die as a “rebirth.”

The two fractures in her spine rendered her paraplegic.

She was reunited with her family and friends in Australia, where she began rehabilitation efforts, following her recovery from surgery.

She finally learnt to walk, albeit with a slight limp, after miraculously regaining sensation in her legs over time.

She now refers to herself as a “walking paraplegic,” a term used to denote paraplegics who regained the ability to walk.

In 2018, when standing, she tore a ligament in her knee, and it was later discovered that she also had a tumor in the region that needed to be removed.

Miraculously, Ms. Carey gradually regained sensation in her legs and finally learned to walk, albeit with a slight limp.

It was only the fifth day of her three-month-long overseas adventure when she decided to skydive in Switzerland alongside her best friend Jemma Mrdak

Ms Carey was rushed to hospital where surgeons operated on her back and pelvis. Her spine was broken in two places rendering her a paraplegic but she has since been able to walk again

Carey has remained positive throughout the ordeal and now looks at the terrifying moment she felt sure she was going to die as a 'rebirth'

I understand how you feel. To think I just had 10 seconds left to live, and now I have the rest of my life, whatever it may be, I think it’s actually great that I have this recollection because it encourages me to be appreciative,’ she said.

I feel as if every day since that date is extra time I get to live, so I should celebrate.

Ms. Carey even made her catwalk debut during Australian Fashion Week in May, wearing a blue bralette and matching underpants.

She described her walk in the Adaptive Fashion show at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week as ‘wonderful and significant’ for the industry.

She remarked at the time, “What a wild, surprising, terrifying, and total honor of an event!”

Emma Carey surprised the Australian Fashion Week runway in May 2022 when she walked in Christina Stephens’ show wearing a slinky blue bralette and matching lace panties.

Fashion for people with impairments is not limited to hospital gowns and medical-model clothing; it may be expressive, accessible, and fun. The very first adaptable runway in Australia demonstrated this.’

The ‘walking paraplegic’ has also written a novel titled ‘The Girl Who Fell from the Sky’ on the day her life was irrevocably altered.

On Monday, Ms. Carey commemorated precisely nine years since she left the hospital after spending months in a spinal unit.

Little did she realize that she would be here nine years later. One day until the release of her debut novel,’ she posted on Instagram.
