Emergency services on high alert as ‘Level 9’ rain continues in Mpumalanga

On Monday, February 13, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued two weather alerts for Mpumalanga. The Level 5 warning indicates a medium risk of substantial weather-based damages, while the Level 9 warning indicates a medium likelihood of severe impacts, according to the warning key.

The weather alerts are in effect from noon on Sunday until midnight on Monday. The Level 9 alert will cover the Ehlanzeni municipality, while the lesser notice will affect some areas of Nkangala and Gert Sibande.

The Mpumalanga Lowveld and escarpment areas will continue to experience widespread showers and thundershowers, according to the weather service.

The weather agency issued a warning that additional rain may make the flooding in the Mpumalanga Lowveld, which includes southern Kruger National Park, worse.

“Some river and catchment systems are overflowing or at capacity. Emergency responders and disaster management may experience prolonged stress as a result of these circumstances.
