Regarding the usage of pyrotechnics on New Year’s Eve, the city of Ekurhuleni has strengthened its bylaws.

Please be aware that the community will observe and report your behavior.

THE Statute Prohibiting the Use of Firecrackers

The use of pyrotechnics is governed by the Gauteng Noise Control Regulation 199 Regulation 9(b) and the EMPD Service Bylaw Section 42 (2) under the category “Disturbing the Peace.”

The City has issued a warning that you will be punished and named and shamed.

The city implored, “Please respect your neighbors and their animals by celebrating without fireworks – it’s the right thing to do.”

HOW TO COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBOR

Call 0860 543 000 to report any illegal use of fireworks to the City of Ekurhuleni’s hotline.

When allowed, the following safety precautions should be taken when launching fireworks:

There should be no usage or discharge of fireworks within 500 meters of any explosive magazine, explosive plant, petroleum depot, or gasometer.

There should be no usage or discharge of fireworks in any building or public road.

Use or discharge firecrackers only with the previous written consent of the municipal government in any public place or resort.
Fireworks may only be sold by wholesale and retail dealers regulated under the Explosives Act and in possession of a valid license granted by the Chief Inspector of Explosives.

No fireworks may be sold from the trunk of a vehicle/trailer/” spaza shop” by a street seller or flea market vendor.
For your protection, do not hold lighted firecrackers in your hands.

Keep a water bucket and hose nearby.

Once the fireworks are ignited, maintain a safe distance.

Children should always be supervised by an adult or parent when using or lighting fireworks.

To safeguard the safety of your pets, keep them away from fireworks and under your care.

Never attempt to produce fireworks on your own.

Keep fireworks away from people, structures, and flammable objects at all times.

Never permit youngsters to pick up firework fragments immediately following their discharge; some may still be burning and could explode at any moment.
