Edinburgh experiencing “unprecedented” wave of bachelor parties despite crackdown on hen and stag tourism by councillors

Last Night of Freedom, a stag and hen do firm, announced that it has already booked half as many pre-wedding celebrations in Edinburgh in less than two months of 2023 as it did in the entire year of 2022.

Almost 10% of future brides and grooms celebrating their last days of singledom this weekend are heading to the Scottish capital, leading to Last Night of Freedom anticipating over 100 groups to visit Edinburgh, an unprecedented number for this time of year.

Edinburgh is renowned for its lively nightlife and attracts millions of party-goers each year, with the Pubic Triangle, Cowgate, and New Town being some of the top nightclubs and bars.

However, this news came shortly after campaigners in Edinburgh demanded action against “nuisance” behavior in the historic Old Town, leading councillors to vote in favor of a “nil cap” policy for adult entertainment venues, including strip clubs.

The Edinburgh Old Town Association (EOTA) proposed this policy, inspired by Amsterdam’s “Stay Away Campaign,” to tighten licensing laws and reduce the opening hours of such venues to deter party-goers from visiting. Eric Drake, an EOTA member, stated that “some types of tourists are better for the city.”

Despite this, Last Night of Freedom’s Managing Director, Matt Mavir, believes that such a policy would have disastrous effects on Edinburgh’s economy.

He estimated that each stag and hen group spends around £5,000 in a weekend, and collectively, they are likely to inject over £500,000 into Edinburgh’s bars, hotels, and restaurants. Manvir argued that suggesting such groups are unwanted is snobbish and that no city can afford to lose millions of pounds, jeopardizing people’s jobs and livelihoods in the current economic climate.
